Although we love our Temecula wines, we do admit that some serious gems exist outside of our beautiful valley. A short drive down the 15 Freeway will bring you to the idyllic Escondido where Orfila Vineyards & Winery serves up ultra-premium wines in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Most wineries in San Diego do not feature a vineyard on the property, so the beautiful grounds with exceptional views are especially appealing for those who are traveling north from San Diego. We are spoiled with many winery/vineyard properties in Temecula, but the cooler temperatures, ocean breezes, and sense of adventure beckon us to wander on down.
I had the recent honor of attending a media event at Orfila, and while I love to write on and on about chefs and food, winemakers and wine, sometimes the images from an evening are more compelling than any words I could conjure up. The video features the song “Southern California” by Mike McGill who entertains Orfila Winery guests on a regular basis. His acoustic surf folk pop rock style is a perfect match for this laid back venue.
Executive Chef and Owner of Culinary Underground Mark Kuhlmann aims to unite the world one meal at a time. For more information on how to contract his services or attend one of his private parties, please find him on the web at www.theculinaryunderground.com.
Not satisfied to rest on the 1300 medals that Orfila has won in major national and international competitions, Winemaker Justin Mund views his tenure at Orfila as an opportunity to put Southern California wines on the map. With over ten years of experience in viticulture and winemaking, he clearly has the vision to maintain and improve the already remarkable Orfila wines. If the varietals we tasted during our evening are any indication, Mund is well on the way to achieving his goal and we cannot wait to sample the results of his success!
