Spring Fling!

Who can forget the famous scene from “Serial Mom” when Kathleen Turner pummels the juror with a shoe for wearing white pumps after Labor Day? Like it or not, we’re slaves to fashion. I became enslaved long ago…mainly because my mom would buy crazy clothes for us off ridiculously reduced clearance racks, but it set precedence for a lifelong love of fashion. I don’t claim to know this year’s Manolo from last and when my sister jealously exclaimed, “Oooh, you brat, you have a Perlina,” I just hoped it wasn’t contagious! That said, I definitely want to bling when I should, bare what I dare, and be-bop-a-lula all the way to the hop on any given day! Don’t we all?

Only weeks away from stepping into spring fashion 2011, here’s the insider’s scoop from an assortment of our most contemporary boutiques in town. These shops were in agreement with the main spring couture, but each had their own twist on the latest styles besides their own store’s distinct vibe.

Run on over to Bel Vilaggio to hit fashion row! Launch this spring by stopping at Anela Apothacary for your skincare and make up needs. Michael’s advice? Strive for a clean face with focus on the eyes and lips. The smoky eye is still IN and can be accentuated with nude or red lips. (Thank you, God, for red lips and please don’t ever let them go away! Amen.) He also tells me that people are still celebrating color. Play up that pumpkin pout with tangerine, coral, and orange lips. Blush your cheeks subtly with a splash of shimmer through the La Bella Donna line of Luminere Blush. Anela Apothacary specializes in several regional skincare lines to help you achieve an optimum glow and fresh face finish. There’s the Coola brand – an eco-conscious, pure, organic sunscreen from Fallbrook; or try the Hawaiian Coffee Fruit Facial from Palos Verdes based company, Four Truffles. This eco-friendly company pays it forward by donating 10% locally and internationally to charities that empower women. Another impressive product is the Napoleon Perdis, the Mac of Australia, which features a curling mascara that lengthens and curls lashes all in one. Throw out the old eyelash curler and grab some of this for a natural formula that’s sure to get you a-winking!

After you have your pretty pucker put on, hit Tangerine – an upscale shop that specializes in fashions for women, men, and babies. Their tip? You will want to sport the wide-leg pant with the classic espadrille to rank in the best-dressed category. Pair these with a tight top, flashy scarf, and an over-sized handbag in order to make a definite statement. Speaking of statements, the staff here tells me that your jewelry is all about making the definitive declaration. Giant rings make the original cocktail ring trifling in comparison. Wrap bracelets and chunky earrings are on a rampage. Rome continues to influence thanks to another season of HBO’s “Spartacus,” so feel free to stock up on your gladiator sandals!

Echoing Michael’s sentiments on celebrating color, Trish at Ooh La La agrees. She notes that we will be seeing vivid colors in feminine, sheer fabrics continuing to pair with leggings this spring. For the more bold taste, Ooh La La has new items arriving daily and takes the prize for the most bedazzling, bejeweled clothing, jewelry, and shoes around. Watch for their Ladies Connection Fashion Show coming up this month at Wilson Creek.

Sexy swimwear + more @ Babydollz. (Photo courtesy of Babydollz)

Before you leave this area, you must stop in at Babydollz Lingerie and find yourself or your love a sexy Burleska of England corset, a sweet Valentine’s nightie, or unique swim suit. This mother-daughter shop will even custom stitch your own swimming suits to give them the scrunchy butt-look or personalize your bridal trousseau. Definitely worth the stop!

Zoom across town to one of the cutest tucked-away boutiques in the area, Belle Handbags & Accessories. Clean, uncluttered, and welcoming! This shop is bursting with some of the most amazing jewelry and cheerful blouses and jeans. It’s spilling over with a stupendous array of handbags anywhere! I’m in love with their very own signature perfume straight from Paris. Belle is owned by Cecilia Becerra and has only been in Murrieta one year. She likes to keep her prices down via a small inventory and by aiding other local businesses, such as Inca jewelry and Killerkini bikinis. Are you worried about arriving at your next party looking like everyone else? Not if you shop here. Cecilia likes to keep the store fresh with new arrivals weekly. Find your glam rings, specialized Parisian jewelry, and, OF COURSE, GI-normous, bright handbags right here!

Next stop –  Couture Fashions with two locations in Murrieta, one on Ivy and the other on Hot Springs. You’re sure to find the hippest fashions with mid-range prices guaranteed to make your budget smile! Stop in at either location and find owners Erica and George ready to help you step out in style this spring. They boast of the biggest selection of the most popular denims from the designers you crave…Miss Me, Mek Denim, and D-Fuz premium skinny jeans. Bling is still a staple for your bags & behind, just a bit more understated than previously. Now you will zing and pack your punch with crazy huge accessories for your hair, rings to adorn your fingers, and sandals to make your tootsies pop. Steve Madden? Juicy? Big bags? All here! George tells me they can hardly keep their in-demand inventory in!

Get bold @ Sarah's. (Photo courtesy of Sarah's Sassy Boutique)

Just jet on down the road to California Oaks, for the last fling on our fashion tour…Sarah’s Sassy Boutique. Talk about small, but mighty! Hot pink walls greet you here with a feeling that you just stepped into your best friend’s bedroom and you can’t wait to raid her closet. Lisa Gamboa is the owner with a sensational staff being managed by the outgoing Danielle! Danielle was full of advice and suggestions for the latest spring fashions emphasizing bold colors, flouncy sundresses with swingy silhouettes, glitzy flip-flops, big bags that double as dependable totes, snazzy clutches, whimsical rings, and outrageously fun accessories for the hair! Stop in for one of their specialty “Girls Night Out” evenings and enjoy champagne, deals, and girl time!

Your fashion expert, Debbie Wiens!

Choose items to brighten and soften your wardrobe. Collect fanciful shoes. Celebrate and channel the bold, happy colors of the 70’s. Reinvent comfort with pajama dressing. When assembling your spring line up, remember Hollywood rules! Wear one expensive, designer item then accessorize from marvelous one-of-a-kind shops (bonus if you can find everything in one stop!). I can always get my groove on in a flirty mid-priced sundress from Free People and some knock-off sunglasses. I’ve splurged on killer Marc Jacobs’s stilettos then lightened my load by purchasing a mischievous clip-comb hairpiece for $12.95! How do you spell Spring?! Find your own eclectic chic that you’ve accumulated from these bountiful boutiques and get it on.
