I have been in the wine industry in Temecula for many years, and there is nothing more pleasurable then sharing with great friends. I recently went to Old Town and visited Mike and Mindy Calabro at their winery Villa Di Calabro. Set back on Main Street behind Rosa’s Cafe is a quaint yellow cottage, and when you walk in you are immediately made to feel at home. Mike and Mindy have been wine lovers and friends of all the vintners in the valley…seems like forever. They collaborated with owners Steve and Valarie Andrews and share the tasting experience with Temecula Hills Winery. They not only make great wines, but also supply us with incredible olive oils and vinegars to taste while enjoying the vino.
I went through several tastes….yup – rough job! My favorite at this time was the 2006 Cabernet Franc. This is medium bodied; the nose gave me floral aromas and when it hit my tongue; and had a wonderful spicy feel in my mouth. Take this wine home and pair it with a roast with grilled vegetables, or keep it simple and make a quiche. Men really do like quiche! The wine will win them over. The Cabernet Franc retails for $28.00 and is available for sale in their charming boutique winery. And don’t forget about the olive oils and vinegars. Mindy was laboriously decorating her new mini 2 oz olive oils and vinegar bottles, perfect for the holiday stocking stuffers. Come in and try the new Oregano, Scallion, Lemon Pepper oils, and the Dessert Balsamic of Raspberry, Vanilla, Blackberry, Cherry and Anisette. They retail for $8.00. Oh and FYI…perfect size to carry on a plane when traveling.
