One of the predominant wine blends here in the Temecula Valley is the Super Tuscan – the majority of the local wineries seem to have at least one on their tasting menu at all times. Off hand, I can think of two great ones – Robert Renzoni’s 2007 Fiore di Fano (Sangiovese is the Italian varietal here) and Wiens Family Cellars’ 2008 Reflection (led by both Sangiovese and Barbera). Both are lovely wines – full of black plum and cherry flavors – with super smooth finishes. Which brings me to a third Super Tuscan style wine – and our Wine Pick of the Week – Falkner Winery’s 2006 Amante.
For those not familiar with such blends, a “Super Tuscan” is led by at least one Italian varietal (typically Sangiovese) and blended with Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The term actually describes any Tuscan red wine that doesn’t adhere to the traditional blending laws for this famous Italian region and has become the “go-to” style of wine for a new generation of Italian wine producers, as well as California wine makers from Napa to Paso Robles to here in our own Temecula wine country.
The Amante is Falkner’s “flagship wine” and their 2006 vintage is made in the traditional Super Tuscan style – led by Sangiovese (60%) and blended with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a black peppery nose with some lingering cherry as well. When tasting, I also pick up strawberry, dried spices, and some blackberry-ish fruit. It’s a complex wine, but also medium-bodied and fairly low in alcohol – 13.9% – which lends it to being very versatile when pairing with food. Think veal, a range of pastas, stuffed bell peppers, grilled vegetables, and perhaps even duck and beef dishes. It’s definitely a true “table wine” as it’ll go with just about any meal.
