Wouldn’t it be great if one could do some good by purchasing and drinking wine? I’m not talking about the personal satisfaction of enjoying a glass of wine. Of course, we all enjoy wine, right? Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article. But I mean actual good – something that will impact people’s lives in a positive manner simply by buying a bottle of nice vino. Wouldn’t that be cool? Wouldn’t the world be a better place?
Turns out, you can. I stopped by one of my favorite wineries this past Tuesday – Cougar Vineyards & Winery – to say “hi” to my friend Mike and catch some laughs. I was out with some friends and Cougar always makes for an entertaining stop along De Portola. While tasting their 2009 Monte’s Blush and 2009 Estate Vermentino, I began reading about their 2009 Pink Cougar and that fact that for each bottle purchased $1 gets donated to Susan G. Koman for the Cure, an organization supporting breast cancer research. Since 1982, Koman (as it’s commonly refereed to) has dedicated almost $1 billion to creating awareness and finding a cure for breast cancer, making it the nation’s largest private funding source for breast health and breast cancer research. Their Inland Empire affiliate – where the proceeds from Cougar Winery’s Pink Cougar purchases go – has itself raised over $500,000 for such research and educational programs.
Just about all of us has been affected by this horrendous disease, whether it’s a mother/sister/wife/daughter who has had breast cancer, a close friend, or you know someone whose family has suffered. Myself, I’ve had two great aunts, a first cousin, and a second cousin all succumb to breast cancer – both cousins within the past 2 years. A close friend of my family’s never got to see her children graduate high school because we have yet to find a cure. And I’m sure many of your can tell the same stories.
So…an easy choice for our weekly “Wine Pick,” right? The great cause is obvious, of course, but I also found myself really enjoying this semi-sweet, refreshing rose. I’m typically not a huge blush fan, but this vintage may have changed my tune & palate. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this light & fruity wine has distinct notes of guava and strawberries, which makes it the perfect summertime picnic wine. Talking to a couple of fellow tasters at the winery, we all determined that this could be a great “hot tub wine” – one that’s not too sweet, but one that’s unique tasting, fresh, and fun. It simply puts a smile on your face. Chill a couple bottles, slide into your jacuzzi, sit back and enjoy. Happy wine is good wine, my friends.
So head down to the De Portola Wine Trail, stop by Cougar Winery, and pick up a bottle of their 2009 Pink Cougar. Mention Taste of Temecula, and they’ll take 15% off the normal price of $16.95 – your price will be just $14.41. This offer ends next Thursday, June 10th. And remember – $1 per bottle will go to Susan G. Koman for the Cure in the battle against breast cancer. Buy a few bottles. Shoot – get a case. After all, this could be one of the most important wine purchases you’ve ever made.
