I’m a sucker for two things; Wine and Spontaneity. (Well actually more than two but Wine and Spontaneity are definitely at the top of the list.) Last minute wine tastings are hard for me to turn down. Yesterday I received an email from one of the oldest wine bars in Old Town Temecula, Stellar Cellars. New owners Julian and Jill Nelson have been putting on weekly events that are drawing a great crowd. The email I received said,”Pinot Noir tasting tonight at 6:30 pm.” Our host was Sue Hanna from Youngs Market and she brought five fantastic Pinots that had everybody holding out their glasses like Oliver Twist crying out, may I have some more please?
Before the tasting Julian Nelson was in the back at the grill making warm Crostini topped with Caprese that melted in my mouth. I was happy to accept one after another until I had my fill and then joined my friends at the bar for tasting. Sue Hanna is a local gal who reps now for Youngs Market and has an incredible personality and vast knowledge of wine. Each wine that Sue poured was accompanied by a quick story, information about the wine, the maker, and other interesting facts. For the most part though Sue let the wine do the talking and we were not disappointed. The Pinots we tasted were from Foley, Gainey Vineyards and Lucienne Vineyards. My favorite of the evening was a toss up between the Gainey Vineyards SRH, Limited Select, 2006 and the Lucienne Vineyards SLH, Lone Oak Vineyard 2007.
Stellar Cellars is a great place for locals and visitors to enjoy a glass or a bottle of wine, listen to excellent local musical artist, and hang out in the heart of Old Town.
