Three-time Grammy nominated Jazz artist and saxophonist Boney James is set to grace the Mediterranean-style fountain terrace stage at Thornton Winery, in gorgeous Temecula Wine Country, this coming Saturday, May 8th at 7:00pm. This is the second show of Thornton Winery’s 22nd annual Champagne Jazz Concert Series, known for its unparalleled line-up of contemporary jazz artists. This year, performances take place Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons from April through October, and saxophonist Euge Groove kicked the season off April 25th – now it’s Boney James’ turn to serve up his unique blend of Contemporary Urban/Pop/R&B Instrumental Jazz.
Concord Records recording artist Boney James has sold over 3 million albums, making him one of the most successful instrumental artists of our time. Boney has had 8 of his releases hit the #1 slot on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart (2 of them have entered the top 10 on the R&B Albums Chart), and his latest, Send One Your Love stayed at number one for 8 consecutive weeks. In 2009, Billboard ranked him the #1 “Hot Smooth Jazz Artist” as well as the #2 “Top Contemporary Jazz Artist,” while also naming him the #3 “Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade” (2000 to 2009) – behind only Norah Jones and Kenny G. Not bad company. Besides his obvious chart and record-selling prowess, Boney James is known the world over for his energetic, lively, and colorful live performances. And now he’s steering his current tour to you here in Temecula – this is a you’re-gonna-hate-yourself-if-you-miss-this-gig kind of show. I’m telling you – secure a baby-sitter for Saturday night and make your reservations now.
Of course, if it was just Boney and his band showing up and playing underneath the gorgeous stars of a Temecula May evening, you’d think that would be enough, right? I would – no doubt. Hey, I’d be fine with that – talent like Boney James doesn’t visit Temecula too often. Count me in. But no…one of the reasons the Champagne Jazz Concert Series has been so successful for 2-plus decades is that a meticulously designed & prepared (and mouth-watering) dinner also comes with the price of a ticket. That’s right – opt for the Gourmet Supper Package and enjoy a 3-course meal provided by Thornton Winery’s award-winning Café Champagne Restaurant. Here’s what Café Champagne’s Executive Chef has in store for you:
Vineyard Antipasto Salad
Cured Tuscan Salami, Marinated Mushrooms, Grilled Zucchini & Peppers, and Marinated Feta Cheese
Braised Beef Short Rib
Creamy Polenta with Roasted Asparagus Spears, served with Provencal Sauce
Chocolate Mocha Torte
White Chocolate Crème Anglaise
Sounds delicious, doesn’t it? The only decisions you’ll need to make are “which wine(s) do I pair with such a lovely meal?” Don’t worry – it won’t be difficult to choose as Thornton Winery has a fantastic selection of white and red varietal wines, as well as, of course, Methode Champenoise sparkling wine/champagne. Perhaps the Thornton NV Cuvee Rouge will go splendidly with your antipasto appetizer. Or consider the Thornton 2007 Huis Zinfandel to pair with the main course – ribs & zin! And for dessert? Hmmm…how about the Thornton 2006 Late Harvest Zinfandel? Sounds like a winning combination to me. Of course, you’ll have many more options as a selection of Thornton Sparkling and Premium Varietal Wines, assorted beverages, and bottled water will also be available for purchase. So many great wines to choose from…say, maybe your wine choice will be difficult after-all.
For those of you selecting the Gourmet Supper Package, you’ll also have a reserved table under a covered patio, plus tax & gratuity will be included (wine purchases are separate). Oh, and you’ll receive a commemorative 2010 Champagne Jazz Series glass. All of this for the steal-of-the-century price of $150 per person. My head is seriously spinning.
Now, for those of you who feel that Boney James and the Gourmet Supper Package isn’t quite the combo you’re seeking for your Saturday night of urban/contemporary jazz entertainment, Thornton has a cool-as-smooth-jazz alternative choice for you – general admission tickets for a mere $75 per person. We’re talking concert-style rows of seats as well as a few small tables for four on a first-come-first-serve basis. And they’ll also have freshly prepared selections from their outdoor Jazz Grill (as well as the wine and beverage selections mentioned above) for purchase before and during the concert. And yes, the commemorative glass is yours for the taking with a general admission ticket purchase. Everyone’s leaving with a Thornton Jazz Series glass on this night!
So, you’re ready for an amazing evening of jazz, food, and wine, aren’t you? I know I am. I can’t wait to see all of you this coming Saturday for what will no doubt be an amazing show courtesy of Boney James and Thornton Winery. As one of Boney’s newest songs from Send One Your Love desires, “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.”
