Imagine you are in Paso Robles traveling west on Peachy Canyon road heading up, as you continue further up hill there at about 2000 feet elevation (don’t ever let anybody tell you that Paso is flat) you run into a winery.
No ladies and gentleman this is not a fantasy, this is where you will find Calcareous vineyards located in the Santa Lucia mountain range. The winery was established in 2000 by Lloyd Messer and his daughter Dana Brown.
Now while I have not made it to the winery yet, I did get a chance to taste several of their wines. On April 15th I met with Rick Potruch sales manager of the winery at Stellar Cellar in Old Town.
If you have not been to Stellar Cellar recently or at all you must stop by. They are under new ownership (since January) and they have just spent time remodeling the place. It is very comfortable and they now have beer on tap also to go along with their selections of wine.
We tasted 7 wines from Calcareous, rather then going through them all, I will list my favorites.
2008 Twisted Sister Chardonnay
I am not typically a fan of most Chardonnays I found this one to be particularly delightful. Notes of vanilla, apple, tropical fruit, and a touch of minerality are all apparent in the nose. As it enters the mouth there are flavors of creamy oak but with a nice crisp finish. Very delightful and refreshing.
Very dark and inky in color very typical of Syrah. Black and red fruits dominate the nose. Once in the mouth, I found flavors of boysenberry and some light herbal notes and a touch of white pepper and oak. A powerful wine with an alcohol of a whopping 15.8%.
2007 Tres Violet
A blend of 58% Syrah, 20% Grenache and 12% Mouvedre. The nose shows dark cherries, raspberries and a hint of chocolate. Cinnamon and spicy fullness in the mid-palate, with a generous, yet soft and lingering finish.
2007 Reserve Mouvedre
The first bottling of this wine and sadly one that will not be made every year. A natural sweet fruit nose framed in leathery, herbed, and spicy notes. On the palate think soft but savory. The fruitiness of its youth will, given time, contribute slightly gamey, almost animal-like flavors. If you have never had a Mouvedre then you must search this one out. An excellent example of the varietal.
Call Stellar Cellar at 951-272-6722 if you would like to purchase any of these wines.
